Meet Your Coach,
Melinda Shorr, PhD
“It has been important to me, through my whole professional life, to be guided by my values at every juncture.”
I was always seeking to work in a helping profession. I hold a PhD in Counseling Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. For several years, I worked with troubled youth and families. It was deeply fulfilling and I felt that I was contributing to positive change in the world.
When I became a mother to my own children, I felt the need to pivot. The stark contrast between the love and attention I could provide to my girls and the lack of resources and nourishment for the children I worked with became very painful to deal with. So I stepped away from the helping profession, moving into pharmaceutical marketing research.
I’ve always been interested in people, so I loved the challenge of this work. I am a curious person, so I have felt rewarded by all the learning this job brought my way. I’ve studied hundreds of medical conditions and explored medical treatments in development. My second act brought good, rewarding work for me but I had lingering questions: How am I making a difference in people's lives? Am I serving the greater good?
I’m constantly working to align my work with my core values. This is what led me to coaching. I’ve discovered that my greatest satisfaction comes when my work helps to make a direct and meaningful impact on people’s lives. I am committed to working with women who are on the cusp – of retirement or other big changes in their lives. This is work where a sincere study of values makes a big difference in creating a rewarding future.
We’re relying on the term “Act 3” as popularized by Julie Shifman in her book...
Act 3: Create The Life You Want After Your First Career And Full-Time Motherhood.
